Walking into a shop, you’ll often see a toad placed on the table, surrounded by scattered gold coins, sometimes even engraved with the characters for "wealth and prosperity."
Toads have long been symbols of wealth and protection. According to the ancient text *Taiping Yulan*, quoting *Xuan Zhong Ji*, it is said: "A toad with horns on its head, when consumed, grants a lifespan of a thousand years and can ward off mountain spirits."
In ancient times, toads were considered auspicious creatures with spiritual energy, believed to ward off illness, protect against evil, promote longevity, and bring wealth and prosperity.
The horned frog (also known as the Pacman frog) gets its name due to the pronounced ridges above its eyes that resemble horns.
Albino South American horned frogs have a body that leans toward a golden hue, which is why some shopkeepers have started keeping golden horned frogs as a replacement for carved fortune toads.
So, how should you care for and place your fortune frog?
🐸 Setting Up a Fortune Frog Habitat
Since the golden horned frog is kept for good fortune, it's recommended to use a larger enclosure, ideally with dimensions of at least 40cm in length, width, and height.
Inside the enclosure, as with regular horned frog care, divide the space into two-thirds for a dry/wet separation and cover one-third with peat soil.
Bury 88 ten-yuan coins in the soil and add some green decorations or plants to symbolize that the coins will grow just like the plants. If you're planting real plants, choose ones that need partial sunlight, and move the enclosure to a sunny spot for about 10 minutes once a week to help the plants thrive. The more vibrant the plants, the more prosperous the fortune!
🐸 Fortune Frog Care Principles
While horned frogs are relatively easy to care for, you'll still need to spend about 15 minutes each week thoroughly cleaning the entire enclosure.
If you're keeping a fortune frog for good luck, you'll need to take extra care of this little animal.
After all, no one wants to see their symbol of fortune and prosperity fall ill or worse.
🐸 Placement for Wealth
Since you’re keeping a fortune frog to attract wealth, the placement of its enclosure is crucial.
You can place the enclosure at a 45-degree angle to the left or right of the entrance, as this spot is often considered the "wealth position."
Many frog enthusiasts have reported seeing improvements in their business after placing their horned frog in this position for two to three months.
In short, choosing the right container, providing proper care, and placing your fortune frog in the wealth position can help enhance your household’s prosperity and good luck.
