During shipping, horned frogs may burrow into the soil. Make sure to retrieve them from a low, safe place.
Many people, upon receiving a horned frog, see it covered in dirt and immediately try to wash it under running water, then rush to feed it on the first day out of fear of starvation.
However, these actions are actually incorrect!
So, how should you properly handle and care for a juvenile horned frog when you receive it? Here are some key points to keep in mind:
1. Unboxing the Horned Frog
Do not feed the frog on the day of arrival. It needs time to adjust to its new environment. Wait one to two days, or even three to four days if the frog is particularly shy, before offering food. It’s normal for some frogs to take time to start eating.
2. Living Environment
Ensure proper dry and wet separation. The frog should not be submerged in water all the time; it needs a dry area as well.
3. Feeding Amount
Feed the frog a portion that is about 1/3 of its body length, with food around 0.6 cm in width.
Each frog is unique, and their digestive response can vary with temperature. Higher temperatures speed up digestion. Different species may have different feeding frequencies based on temperature. We recommend the following safer feeding frequency for reference:
4. Food Selection
In addition to staple food, it’s best to rotate different types of food. Just like with humans, even the most nutritious food should not be the only thing consumed every day. Common live food options for horned frogs include:
PS: We’ll cover how to properly defrost food in a future post!
5. Avoid Group Housing
Under any circumstances, keep each frog in its own separate space.
6. Substrate for Horned Frogs
Common substrates include white cotton, bio cotton, peat moss, and black soil. If you see any frog waste, clean it up immediately. It's also recommended to completely replace the substrate every week.
When raising a horned frog for the first time, it's natural to feel a bit unsure.
However, as long as you follow the key points mentioned above and watch the instructional videos, anyone can successfully raise a healthy and chubby horned frog!
