Horned frogs are ground-dwelling animals, naturally inclined to bury themselves in the soil with only their eyes exposed, waiting to ambush prey that passes by. So, they naturally prefer being in soil.
But does a horned frog absolutely need to be kept in soil?
🐸 Do Horned Frogs Need Soil?
Not necessarily. As long as we understand a few basic principles of horned frog behavior, they can be kept comfortable and healthy even without soil.
First, let's explore why horned frogs bury themselves in the soil.
Horned frogs choose to bury themselves because it makes them feel safe and comfortable. If we want to create a similar environment without using soil, you can carve out a hole in a sponge and let the frog hide inside it. This mimics the feeling of being buried, giving the frog a sense of security.
🐸 Temperature and Humidity Effects
Horned frogs use soil to regulate their body temperature and humidity. However, as long as we provide them with the appropriate temperature and humidity levels, soil isn't always necessary.
For South American horned frogs, the ideal temperature range is around 25-30°C. Even in winter, it’s recommended to keep the temperature above 20°C.
In these conditions, the frog doesn’t necessarily need soil to stay warm.
During summer, the temperature should be kept below 30°C. As long as the environment is at the right temperature, the frog won't feel the need to bury itself in the soil.
Although horned frogs don’t necessarily need soil for their care, if circumstances allow, providing some soil can make them even happier.
After all, horned frogs are creatures of the natural world, and as their keepers, it's our responsibility to ensure they have the best possible environment.
